Savage quits Wales

Robbie Savage has retired from international football.

Wales star Robbie Savage has announced his retirement from international football.

Savage has decided to step away from the Wales side to concentrate on his club football with Blackburn Rovers.

The combative midfielder had hinted at retirement when Mark Hughes resigned as international manager, with John Toshack coming in to replace him.

Savage has decided not to aid his nation in their uphill task of qualifying for the World Cup in 2006, in a decision that will raise a few eyebrows.

The 30-year-old played 39 times for Wales, scoring two goals but becoming an instant hit with his committed style.

Wales are currently languishing in the penultimate place in World Cup qualifying Group Six, having lost two and drawn two of their opening four games.

One of those defeats came at the hands of England, a match that Savage found himself suspended for.

However, with six games left to play, Wales will still harbour hopes that they can catch the leading pair of England and Poland.
