Striker leaves Rushden

Rushden & Diamonds have released Gareth Seddon due to illness.

Rushden & Diamonds have released Gareth Seddon, who may be forced to drop out of the professional game.

Seddon joined Rushden on a free transfer in the summer from Bury but has been unable to make an appearance for the League Two side.

The 24-year-old has now been diagnosed as suffering from a condition called spondyloarthropathy, which is a reactive arthritis which attacks the joints.

He has reached an agreement to cancel his contract with Rushden and hopes to be able to continue playing at a semi-professional level.

"Obviously this is a huge disappointment but I may be able to play at semi-pro level where the training is less intense," Seddon told the club's official website.

"I would like to thank the club for its tremendous support throughout this season and I wish them all the very best for the future."

Meanwhile, Rushden boss Ernie Tippett is assessing the merits of two former Premiership players - Jonathan Bewers and Andrew Couzens.

Former Aston Villa defender Bewers was released midway through a short-term contract with Walsall late last year, after signing for The Saddlers in September.

Couzens previously represented Leeds United but has not been involved in league football since leaving Blackpool in May 2000.

Both players figured for Rushden's reserves against Leyton Orient earlier in the week and will have hoped to have impressed.

In addition, young forward Robert Duffy has been allowed to join non-league Stamford on a month's loan.
