Xabi hits out at Lampard

Xabi Alonso has blasted Frank Lampard for the tackle that broke his ankle.

Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso has blasted Frank Lampard for the tackle which broke his ankle.

The Spanish schemer suffered the broken ankle after a late tackle by Lampard during Chelsea's victory at Anfield on New Year's Day.

Alonso now faces up to two months on the sidelines and the Spanish international believes Lampard was lucky to escape a sending off for the offence.

"The tackle was hard and late," said Alonso.

"I want to think it was not deliberate. But what surprised me was he protested to the referee when it was a clear foul. I've seen sendings-off for a lot less.

"I thought there was something broken. And when I couldn't walk, I realised it was serious."

Lampard has apologised for the tackle and insists he meant no harm to Alonso.

"I'm disappointed Alonso broke his ankle, which is horrible," said Lampard.

"I didn't mean to do that and hope he'll be back soon."
