Stags land midfielders

Mansfield Town have boosted their midfield ranks with two new signings.

Mansfield Town have boosted their midfield ranks with two new signings at Field Mill.

Midfielder Simon Brown has joined The Stags in a deal worth £100,000 from Premiership side West Bromwich Albion.

The 21-year-old signed an 18-month deal with the Nottinghamshire-based outfit - with an option for a further year.

Brown's move to Mansfield comes after the player had spent time on loan with League Two rivals Kidderminster Harriers.

Stags caretaker manager Carlton Palmer was pleased to land the youngster from The Hawthorns.

"The lad has got great pace, great ability and I believe that him only being 21 is an added bonus," Palmer told the club's official website.

"The players we have now are on big money and are short term, so the chairman (Keith Haslam) has invested in a young player who doesn't demand so much in wages, but Simon will be compensated later on if he does as well as we expect him to."

He is joined by fellow midfielder Leyton Maxwell after the former Swansea City player signed non-contract forms on Monday.

The 25-year-old has been training with The Stags for the past couple of months and has already appeared in the reserves.

Maxwell's deal will allow Palmer to use him in his first team selection.
