Dowie: Johnson staying put

Iain Dowie insists that Andy Johnson will not be sold 'under any circumstances'.

Crystal Palace manager Iain Dowie has insisted that top-scorer Andy Johnson will not be sold 'under any circumstances'.

Johnson finished as top-scorer last season, as The Eagles came through the Division One play-offs to seal their place in The Premiership.

The 23-year-old, who has just penned a new five-year deal at Selhurst Park, has started the season in fine fashion with seven goals to his name so far.

A number of clubs are now understood to be keeping tabs on the former Birmingham City star, but Dowie insists Johnson will not be sold.

"It would have to be a big club because we'd want big money," said Dowie.

"I wouldn't sell him. He's got everything. He's brave, quick and is developing into a cute finisher. And he's only 23.

"Andy's not for sale under any circumstances. He's the crown jewels and he's just signed a five-year contract. The answer would be a firm no to anyone who picks up the phone.

"He deserves the adulation because he works his socks off and is very self-effacing. He's very intense about his work effort and a bubbly character who's settled in his surroundings. He's an intelligent footballer, an instinctive centre forward.

"But Arsenal would be a different side without Henry, and where would United be without Ruud van Nistelrooy's goals? They are indispensable.

"Could we do without Andy Johnson? Absolutely not. I'm not going to pretend we could. He would be a huge loss."
