Rooney arrives at Carrington

Wayne Rooney has arrived at Manchester United's training ground.

Wayne Rooney has arrived at Carrington, Manchester United's training ground, on Tuesday morning.

Although Everton have still to confirm they have agreed a fee with Bank Holiday Monday's Premiership opponents, the teenager was pictured driving to meet Sir Alex Ferguson in a black Mercedes.

With the transfer window slamming shut at midnight, United face a race against time to wrap up the signing of the England international.

Despite the player's foot injury, the medical is not expected to pose any problems and The Red Devils are hopeful of snaring the 18-year-old following more talks.

Everton have disclosed that their feisty forward has already had medical tests at a hospital in Manchester. However, spokesman Ian Ross has stressed that a deal has not yet been agreed.

"I must stress that no deal has yet been done," he stated. "We have always said we are looking for the best available deal for the club and supporters, and that is what we intend to do."

The fee is believed to be around £25 million, with Everton due to receive further payments depending upon United's future success, plus a percentage of any sell-on figure.

Newcastle United were also in the race to sign Rooney but the dismissal of Sir Bobby Robson has thrown the North East club into turmoil, with a defender the top priority ahead of the deadline following the sale of Jonathan Woodgate to Real Madrid.

Rooney received abuse from Goodison Park fans following his decision to submit a transfer request last week, and, although it was expected that United would look to buy the exciting prodigy in the New Year, the transfer has been brought forward.

Everton drew 0-0 with Ferguson's side during the fixture at Old Trafford.
