Campo's Bolton delight

Ivan Campo has stressed that joining Bolton Wanderers was the turning point in his career.

The defender-cum-midfielder was lured to Bolton from Real Madrid in 2002, having slipped out of the picture at El Santiago Bernabeu.

Many felt Campo's style of play would not suit The Premiership, but he took to the rigours of life in England straight away and has proved a solid servant to Trotters chief Sam Allardyce.

Campo will embark on his third season in England and he claims the move to Bolton breathed new life into his career.

"After my time at Real Madrid, coming here was the best thing that could have happened to me," he told Marca. "I have started to enjoy football again.

"Although I was successful at Madrid, it was not all good.

"Here they have treated me superbly and I have returned to the player I was."

Campo will be joined at The Reebok Stadium by his former Real team-mate Fernando Hierro and he will do all he can to help his compatriot adapt to life at Bolton, but stressed that the Spanish legend has nothing to prove anyone.

Bolton boss Allardyce pulled one of the coups of the summer when luring Hierro back to Europe following his spell in Qatar.

Hierro is likely to be charged with the task of marshalling The Trotters' back-line, and Campo is ready to ease the veteran defender's transition.

"It is my good fortune that I will get to play with him again and I will help him in any way I can," Campo said.

"Fernando does not have anything to prove, as he has achieved everything in the world of football.

"Players of his stature appear once every 30 years and his transfer has caused great excitement."

Campo is now 30, but he feels he can still learn from playing alongside Hierro.

"I can still learn many things from him," added Campo. "I cannot give him any advice because he is a great."
