Boumsong suffers injury blow

Auxerre defender Jean-Alain Boumsong faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines after fracturing his skull.

The French international, who is set to join Rangers in the summer, sustained the injury in Saturday's draw with Bastia.

The 24-year-old now faces an operation and he is set to be sidelined for a number of months.

The injury could raise doubts over his participation at Euro 2004 with France, but Boumsong is hopeful of making a quick recovery.

"I took a huge blow in the face in the game against Bastia.

"I'm suffering from a fracture of my left eye socket and a small cranial trauma. I had a scan and X-ray in hospital and they confirmed it was a fracture."

"I expect that I will be out for a number of weeks.

"In the immediate future I will have to see a specialist, who will decide whether I will need an operation.

"At the moment I have a massive headache. My sinuses are full of blood, although there is no internal bleeding.

"One thing is certain, and that is that I was frightened. I was knocked completely cold.

"When it happened I at first saw double, then nothing at all.

"I am not at the peak of my form right now - that is for sure.

"But I really hope to be back playing as soon as possible."
