Spurs' Convey deal confirmed

MLS have confirmed the transfer of DC United midfielder Bobby Convey to Tottenham Hotspur, pending his expected work permit approval.

The 20-year-old US international will join the North London club once he has been granted necessary permission from the Home Office to play professionally in England. The deal is believed to be worth around $1.5 million.

"Through DC United, MLS and the US national team program, Bobby has grown into a special player in a short amount of time," said United technical director Dave Kasper.

"At Spurs, Bobby has the opportunity to prove that he can succeed in one of the top leagues in the world. We are extremely proud and happy for Bobby and wish him the best of luck."

Convey became the youngest player drafted into MLS when he was chosen by United with the club's first-round pick in the 2000 MLS SuperDraft.

He was thrust into action by necessity during United's 2000 MLS campaign. Originally earmarked to play the majority of the season with the league's Project-40 developmental squad, Convey was called upon early in the season.

"I'd like to thank DC United, my team mates and the great soccer supporters in Washington, DC," said Convey.

"Kevin Payne and others within the organisation helped me grow as a player and a person, and my team mates have been great.

"I owe much of my success to them. I'm glad to have spent the last four years with this club, playing before the best fans in MLS.

"Moving to Tottenham is the next step in my career, and I'm ready to prove that American soccer players can develop to the point we can compete at the highest levels of our game."

The young midfielder has also emerged on the United States national team scene. Despite his age, Convey has amassed a wealth of experience at the international level.

He has earned 18 full caps in his international career and has made the most appearances (15) of any player for the team in 2003.

At 17 years and 151 days old, he became the third youngest player in national team history to earn a full cap when he played against Mexico.

Convey has also been a fixture on the US youth teams. He captained the US Under-20 national team to a berth in the 2003 World Youth Championship at the qualifying tournament played last November in Charleston.

He plans to lead the US in the 2003 tournament to be held this November in the United Arab Emirates, after already representing the Under-20's previously at the 2001 event in Argentina. Convey scored three goals, including a brace in the opener, at the Concacaf qualifying tournament in 2001.

As member of the US Under-17 National Team, Convey was the youngest player on the team at the 1999 Fifia Under-17 World Championship.

He appeared in 45 matches for the Under-17's in 1999, starting 43 games and scoring 19 goals.
