McCarthy poised to land Breen

SUNDERLAND boss Mick McCarthy is hoping to complete the signing of Republic of Ireland centre half Gary Breen this week, having snapped up former Manchester City midfielder Jeff Whitley on Monday.

The former Republic of Ireland manager is keen to add one of his former international charges to the Wearsiders before The Black Cats start the season on Saturday at Nottingham Forest.

Breen is to have a medical with the North East club on Monday and is expected to sign a two-year deal following his release from West Ham United at the end of last season.

Despite still having Emerson Thome and Joachim Bjorklund available as back-line options, McCarthy has still targeted a new centre back for the upcoming Division One season.

"I've been looking for a centre back and Gary is a vastly experienced defender who I'm sure will do well for us," McCarthy told Sunderland's official website.

"I don't anticipate that there will be any problems with the medical and expect he'll sign a two-year contract later today (Monday) or tomorrow (Tuesday)."

Meanwhile, The Black Cats have signed midfielder Whitley, who joined initially on non-contract terms last April following his release from City.

The 24-year-old featured in a number of reserve matches for the club last season and has had a prominent role in Sunderland's pre-season this summer.

Whitley was delighted to sign with his new club and is looking forward to the coming campaign.

"I'm glad to get things sorted. I've had regular chats with the manager but because of the club's situation I've had to be patient," said Whitley.

"I had a chat with the manager when I first came last season and this is the club I wanted to sign for.

"It's great that this has paid off and I can't wait for the new season."
