Verlaat set to leave Werder

WERDER BREMEN are set to severe ties with Dutch veteran defender Frank Verlaat after the North Germans failed to qualify for the Uefa Cup, revealed director of sport Klaus Allofs.

The 35-year-old enjoyed an outstanding season, but Werder are expected to cut their wage bill by 20 percent and have so far refused to open talks with Verlaat, who is one of the club's highest-paid players.

"The plans are not to extend the contract with Frank Verlaat," Allofs told Kicker, after his side missed out on Europe following their 4-1 defeat at Borussia Monchengladbach.

The former Dutch international enjoyed a long-spell at VfB Stuttgart, before he left Ajax Amsterdam for a Bundesliga return with Bremen three years ago.
