Jones set to complete Southend move

SOUTHEND UNITED are set to complete the signing of striker Graeme Jones from Scottish First Division side St. Johnstone.

The 32-year-old former Wigan Athletic hit-man will complete his move to the Roots Hall club on Monday for an undisclosed fee following a medical.

Jones told the Southend United official website: "I've still got to pass the medical and sort out a few other little things but it should be fine.

"I'm really pleased to get back in England.

"I started my career here when I was with Millwall as a 16-year-old and it looks as if things have come full circle now.

"I haven't spoken to any of the players yet but I'll be training with them this morning so I'll get to know them then."

Southend boss Rob Newman, a former team-mate of Jones at Wigan, is delighted to have added an experienced old-fashioned centre forward to his 18-man squad.

Newman said: "Hopefully he can bring us some goals.

"Five or six years ago he won the Golden Boot (in Division Two).

"Thirty five/thirty six goals I think he got at Wigan when they won it by a mile (the division) so I'm just hoping he can repeat the feat and we can repeat the feat too.

"He has a great attitude and he's at an age where hopefully he can help the younger players in the team.

"So I'm predicting a good year for him."
