Kahn scoops Golden Ball

OLIVER KAHN has lifted the coveted Golden Ball award for his World Cup displays in the German net, with the panel seemingly overlooking the blunder that handed Brazil the opening goal in the Yokohama showpiece.

The imposing custodian garnered a total of 147 media votes to push Golden Boot winner Ronaldo into second place with a tally of 126.

South Korea skipper Hong Myung-Bo finished in third with 108 votes, with his error in the third-fourth place play-off against Turkey also glossed over.

Kahn was a formidable barrier between the sticks in the Far East and his quick reflexes helped Germany to concede just one goal until the World Cup final.

Brazil lifted football's ultimate prize with a 2-0 triumph in Japan and the Bayern Munich shot-stopper was left close to tears after fumbling a Rivaldo shot to allow Ronaldo to slot home the opening goal.

The Golden Ball award, sponsored by German sports manufacturer Adidas, will help to ease the pain of defeat for Kahn who becomes the first goalkeeper to win the accolade.

Kahn has already picked up the Lev Yashin trophy for the best keeper in the World Cup leaving the likes of Rustu Recber and Marcos in his wake.
