Okocha confirms retirement

AUGUSTINE OKOCHA has confirmed he will retire from playing international football with Nigeria.

The midfield schemer had been contemplating whether to hang up his Super Eagles boots following their first round exit in the World Cup.

Okocha had initially stated he would definitely quit the national team at the end of the World Cup.

However, the Bolton Wanderers man left the door ajar by saying he would reconsider his decision if Nigeria appointed a foreign coach to succeed Festus Onigbinde.

That avenue appears unlikely and the 28-year-old no longer has the inclination to pull on a Nigeria shirt.

"When there is no more motivation or excitement, it is time to leave," said Okocha.

The former Paris Saint Germain ace also cited the intervention of the Nigerian government into football matters as a further reason behind his decision.

Okocha joined Taribo West and Ike Shorunmu in announcing their retirement from the international scene.
