Eriksson announces England squad

SVEN GORAN ERIKSSON has named his England squad for the World Cup Finals, with no major surprises in the 23-man party.

There had been speculation that Blackburn striker Matt Jansen would make the squad, but instead Eriksson has plumped for Martin Keown as an extra centre back.

The squad will disappoint a number of players most notably Chelsea's Frank Lampard and Danny Murphy who have been fixtures in the side in recent weeks, although the Liverpool man is on stand-by.

Euro '96 and France '98 veteran Darren Anderton misses out, while Ray Parlour's two superb performances in the past week have not been enough to earn him a place on the plane to Japan and South Korea.

Similarly Steve McManaman's part in helping Real Madrid reach the Champions League final has not resulted in a call-up to the squad, as Eriksson opted to go for youth.

Among the youngsters who have won themselves a place in the squad in the last few months include Bayern Munich's Owen Hargreaves, Southampton defender Wayne Bridge and West Ham playmaker Joe Cole.

Eriksson is looking forward to meeting up with his chosen squad as he prepares for the finals.

"We have some difficult matches but an extremely exciting time ahead of us," Eriksson told the FA.com

"I am happy to name this squad and I'm looking forward to meeting up with the players on Monday."
