Royals look at Talia - No Gayle deal

READING boss Alan Pardew is looking to recruit Australian goalkeeper Frank Talia as cover until the end of the campaign.

With Ben Roberts returning to Charlton and Phil Whitehead picking up niggling injuries the Royals chief wants to have strength-in-depth in the goalkeeping position with 12 games remaining and a promotion spot at stake.

"We have Frank here with us today (Tuesday) and we are trying to bring him in as cover until the end of the season as I don't want to end up in a situation like we have in the past," Pardew told the Evening Post.

"Phil (Whitehead) is back and is fine after his return against Swindon and we are looking to give him another run-out in the reserves tomorrow (Wednesday)."

Talia was released by Sheffield United at the end of last season and moved to Royal Antwerp where he has made three appearances between the sticks.

Meanwhile, Pardew had played down suggestions that The Royals made a move for transfer-listed Marcus Gayle of First Division Watford.

It was understood that the former Crystal Palace man contacted The Hornets with a view to landing the experienced striker.

"Marcus Gayle will definitely not be coming to Reading," explained Pardew.

"We are not trying to bring him here. I did make inquiries to Watford about the players on the list.

"We were interested in bringing in someone on loan but Watford were not interested in that."

Espen Baardsen, Pierre Issa, Allan Nielsen and Ramon Vega are on the transfer-list at Vicarage Road along with Gayle, although it remains to be seen which player Pardew had his eye on.
