Kirkland makes timely return

LIVERPOOL'S goalkeeping problems have eased with the news that Chris Kirkland has returned to training after injury.

The England Under-21 international has been on the sidelines after twisting his ankle in the warm-up before the clash with Southampton last month.

With first choice keeper Jerzy Dudek struggling with a groin injury picked up against Ipswich Town last week The Reds had only Pegguy Arphexad available to step into the breach.

The Polish shot-stopper is rated doubtful for next week's crucial Champions League tie with Galatasaray, but should he miss out Kirkland is now ready to step in for his European debut against the Turks.

Liverpool caretaker boss Phil Thompson is delighted that Kirkland is ready to step in if needed.

"Chris returned to training yesterday and he trained really well," said Thompson.

"That is positive aspect for us because it is still only 50/50 if Jerzy Dudek will make it for the Galatasaray game.

"We also have Pegguy Arphexad to come in if necessary."

The Reds also received a further boost when French defender Gregory Vignal returned to training after a new injury scare.

The left-sided full back, who suffered a fractured foot earlier this season, picked up a knock to his foot in a reserve clash on Monday, but tests have shown no serious damage.
