INJURY BLOW FOR SHEVCHENKO

ANDREI SHEVCHENKO has emerged as a doubt for Ukraine`s World Cup qualification play-off against Germany on November 10, after fracturing his nose in Milan`s 0-0 draw with Bologna on Sunday.

The striker was forced from the field of play during the second-half at the San Siro with a nasty looking facial injury. He was promptly taken to hospital, and X-rays confirmed he had sustained a broken nose.

The former Dinamo Kiev man has had surgery to correct the problem, and early, unconfirmed, reports are suggesting he could return in ten days, meaning he will be available for the vital qualifier with Germany.

Ukraine are certain to do everything possible to make sure their star forward is fit for the encounter with Rudi Voller`s Germany in two weeks` time.

Shevchenko was not the only player to visit the hospital from the San Siro encounter, as Bologna defender Fabio Macellari suffered a similar injury.

Milan`s woes have been further compounded by news that Italian defender Paolo Maldini faces a spell on the sidelines, and Rui Costa has dislocated his ankle.

Maldini hobbled off during the second-half with a leg injury, and he is likely to be sidelined for around two weeks, while Rui Costa could be out for a longer period.

Milan coach Fatih Terim bemoaned his side`s mounting injury problems.

"I don't like to have so many players injured all together," he said after a game which also saw Portuguese ace Rui Costa pick up an injury.

"Shevchenko`s injury did not help us, " he added. "We also suffered when Maldini went off, as we were just starting to assert.

"I hope Andrei and Paolo are not out for too long, as they are key players and are irreplaceable."
