NEWCASTLE THROUGH TO INTERTOTO FINAL

NEWCASTLE UNITED sealed their passage through to the Intertoto Cup final, and a chance at reaching the Uefa Cup -with a 3-1 win on the night handing the Magpies a convincing 6-3 aggregate victory over 1860 Munich.

Gary Speed had given Newcastle the perfect start when, after just four minutes of the match, he had given home side a two goal aggregate cushion.

The former Leeds United star displayed his renowned aerial ability when his diving header diverted a Nolberto Solano cross into the back of the Bundesliga side's net.

1860, however, proved that they were anything but pushovers, and put themselves back in with a shout when Markus Scroth converted to make the score 4-3 overall.

New £9.5 million signing Laurent Robert was given a standing ovation when he was paraded on the pitch before the game, and he will be itching to impress the vociferous Toon with his abilities this season.

Speed, one of the senior figures at St James Park, looked influential throughout and was a constant threat from midfield for Newcastle.

The second half saw Newcastle squander a number of chances - most notably through Solano.

The Peruvian was visibly angry with himself for failing to hit the target, after brilliant work from young-gun Shola Ameobi.

However, United were always on top and put the match beyond 1860's reach when Lomano Lua-Lua scored his first goal on home soil.

The former Colchester star was quickest to react to a mistake from Vidar Riseth and slotted home to the delight of the partisan home crowd.

With the game in the bag The Magpies turned on the style, and Solano finally got the goal he deserved with just five minutes remaining when he slotted home from the spot after a handball to make it 3-1 on the night and 6-3 on aggregate.
