SPURS LINE UP DUDEK AFTER CHAMOT

TOTTENHAM are lining up a bid for Feyenoord`s Polish keeper Jerzy Dudek, but will only pursue the deal if another transfer target - Jose Antonio Chamot - is confirmed as an EU citizen.

Spurs already have two non-EU players on their books in Ukrainian Sergei Rebrov and Goran Bunjevcevic of Yugoslavia, both of whom are likely to be in Glenn Hoddle`s starting XI next season and Premier League rules state that you can only have three in your matchday squad.

Dudek is now a target for Spurs, but in a similar way to a move to Barcelona failed to materialize, a switch to White Hart Lane could be jeopardised due to the players's non-EU status.

It does seem that Tottenham are definitely in the market for a new keeper to challenge current incumbent Neil Sullivan.

The 27-year-old Pole has already seen one move to North London fall through this season after Arsenal pulled out of a deal at the last moment and chose to sign Ipswich star Richard Wright.

Tottenham are close to securing a £2 million deal for Milan`s Argentine international defender Chamot and are looking to seal the transfer within the next week, but if he has an Italian passport then Spurs will also pursue Dudek.

The London club are hoping that because Chamot has been resident in Italy for nine out of the last 11 years he will be granted EU citizenship.

And indeed Dudek`s agent Jan de Zeeuw, who refused to confirm or deny that Tottenham were interested, revealed that negotiations are underway with someone.

"The deal is about the number of non-EU players in the club, we are talking with," said de Zeeuw.

"The club, which I`m talking with, is making a deal right now with one other foreigner player. They are not sure if he is an EU citizen, but they say he may hold an Italian passport.

"If that is true, there is going to be a place for Jurek."

Tottenham last week pulled out of a deal for Blackburn`s Alan Kelly and having already sold Ian Walker to Leicester earlier this month they are short of cover in the goalkeeping department.
