England were sent packing from Euro 2016 by Iceland - and Roy Hodgson quit shortly after the embarrassing defeat.
Wayne Rooney had given England the lead just four minutes into the last-16 tie in Nice but Iceland - the lowest-ranked side in the tournament hit back twice inside the opening 20 minutes and Hodgson's side failed to muster a fightback.
Hodgson's contract was due to expire at the end of Euro 2016 but he swiftly took his future into his own hands, reading out a prepared statement at the his post-match press conference to confirm his resignation.
"I would have loved to stay on for another two years. However, I am pragmatic and I know we are in the results business," said the 68-year-old, who succeeded Fabio Capello as manager in 2012.
"My contract was always up after the Euros, so now is the time for someone else to oversee the progress of this young, hungry and extremely talented group of players."
England had sailed through qualifying with a 100 per cent record under Hodgson's stewardship - but Iceland's shock win brought his four-year reign to an abrupt end.
