Tyler's Starting Stat - Liverpool seeing double

I was at Stamford Bridge on Sunday to see Liverpool's third Premier League win there, all of which were achieved by a 1-0 scoreline (Oct 08: Jose Bosingwa og; Jan 04: Bruno Cheyrou; and Feb 11: Raul Meireles). Their record at Stamford Bridge now reads: P19 W3 D4 L12. However, the Reds have only scored eight goals at Stamford Bridge in Premier League history. This was the second time they have done the double over Chelsea, the other occasion was two years ago when they won 1-0 at Stamford Bridge and 2-0 at Anfield courtesy of a Fernando Torres brace - just like this year! In six Premier League games under Kenny Dalglish their record reads: P6 W4 D1 L1 Pts13. They have scored first in every game and their four wins have all come in a row, without conceding. The defeat means Chelsea can no longer achieve the 86 points they won league with last season. They needed to win all of their final 14 games to do that. Finally, I was interested to learn that Nicolas Anelka played 22 games for Liverpool and scored five goals. He has now played 22 times against them - and has scored five goals!

GOALS GALORE
Dear Martin. Today (Saturday) has been one of the craziest days I have ever seen in the Premier League. Can you tell me if there has ever been a single day with more goals? Also. I noticed there were lots of penalties scored today. Have we seen a record there as well? Anthony. MARTIN SAYS:
Saturday's goal fest of 41 goals in eight games set a new Premier League record for a 38-game season. Only on May 8, 1993, the final Saturday of the very first Premier League season, have we seen more nets bulging on a single afternoon in the Premier League. On that day we saw 47 goals in nine games and the results were as follows: Liverpool 6 - 2 Tottenham
Man City 2 - 5 Everton
Coventry 3 - 3 Leeds
Arsenal 3 - 0 C Palace
Sheff Utd 4 - 2 Chelsea
Blackburn 1 - 0 Sheff Wed
Oldham 4 - 3 Southampton
Middlesbrough 3 - 3 Norwich
Ipswich 2 - 1 Nottm Forest The previous record for a 38-game season was the 36 goals scored on November 27 earlier in this campaign. Here, Opta have listed the dates when we have seen the most Premier League goals: 08/05/1993: 47*
05/02/2011: 41
03/10/1992: 40*
22/08/1992: 38*
12/04/1993: 36*
27/11/2010: 36
26/12/1999: 35
11/05/2008: 34
31/12/1994: 34*
07/05/1994: 33*
05/02/2000: 33
02/05/1998: 33 * This was a 42-game Premier League season. The most goals ever scored on a single day in the English top flight was Boxing Day 1963 when 66 goals were scored in 10 First Division games. And to answer your other question, Opta tell us that more penalties were scored on Saturday than on any other day in the history of the Premier League. The seven penalties scored by Joey Barton (2), Carlos Tevez (2), David Dunn, Ben Watson and Rafael van der Vaart set a new record. Of course, it would have been eigh,t but Van der Vaart had to retake a successful penalty for encroachment and the resulting spot kick was missed.

IN THE LONG RUN
Dear Martin, I don't want to be a pain in the butt and I'm sure you've answered this before, but looking at your page I can't find the answer. This season must be a record for Man Utd's unbeaten run, but what was the previous best? Many thanks.Barrie Jackson MARTIN SAYS:
We have mentioned this topic a few times, but now their Premier League unbeaten run has come to an end following their defeat to Wolves it seems like a good time to look at the stats. If United had won at Molineux on Saturday they would have set a new club record for consecutive unbeaten league games. They had gone 29 matches unbeaten in the league, stretching back to last season's 2-1 defeat to Chelsea at Old Trafford. That matched their previous record of 29 unbeaten games which was set between December 1998 when they lost 3-2 to Middlesbrough, and October 1999 when they lost 5-0 at Chelsea. But while this United team have matched the longest unbeaten league run in their history, they have some way to go to match the longest unbeaten run in Premier League history. That, of course, is the 49-game run achieved by Arsenal's 'Invincibles' - a run that was ended by United in October 2004. Longest unbeaten runs in Premier League history (thanks to Opta for these stats):

THE BIGGEST BOUNCE BACKS
Newcastle's comeback at the weekend was unbelievable, and if the Sky Sports commentary team are to be believed, coming back from 4-0 down is a new Premier League record. Is that true? If not, what is, or if it is, what other comebacks come close? Also, what's the biggest comeback where a team have actually managed to turn it around and go on to win the game, like we would have had Kevin Nolan had managed to get his last shot on target? Thanks, love the column!! Chris Pratt (Newcastle Utd fan) MARTIN SAYS:
No team in the history of the Premier League has ever come back from four goals down to get a draw or a win before, so Newcastle achieved something very special this weekend. In fact, previously only 12 teams have ever bounced back from being three goals behind to take something out of a game and to answer your question, there are four teams that have come from 3-0 down to win a Premier League game. The team to do so was Leeds at home to Derby in November 1997 and then Wimbledon repeated the trick by winning 4-3 at West Ham in September 1998. Manchester United famously came from 3-0 down at Tottenham to win 5-3 in September 2001 and Wolves won 4-3 against Leicester in 2003, despite being 3-0 down at half-time. Below I have detailed all the teams in Premier League history to have come from three goals down to earn a draw or a win before Newcastle. Wins from 3-0 down:
Nov 8 1997: LEEDS 4-3 Derby
Sep 9, 1998: West Ham 3-4 WIMBLEDON
Sep 29, 2001: Tottenham 3-5 MAN UTD
Oct 25, 2003: WOLVES 4-3 Leicester Draws from 3-0 down:
Dec 26, 1992: Sheff Wed 3-3 MAN UTD
Sep 1, 1993: Sheff Wed 3-3 NORWICH
Jan 4, 1994: LIVERPOOL 3-3 Man Utd
Aug 26, 2000: SOUTHAMPTON 3-3 Liverpool
Sep 6, 2000: Derby 3-3 MIDDLESBROUGH Draws from 4-1 down:
Feb 22, 1995: Aston Villa 4-4 LEICESTER
Jan 22, 2005: NORWICH 4-4 Middlesbrough
Oct 1, 2007: TOTTENHAM 4-4 Aston Villa Flicking through the history books, I can find a significant example of a team winning a game in the English leagues, despite being four goals down. Back on December 21,1957, Charlton were 5-1 down at home to Bill Shankly's Huddersfield in the old Division Two with 10 men. Charlton then fired five unanswered goals in 19 minutes before conceding another to leave the scores poised at 6-6. Then in the dying moments, John Ryan scored to, amazingly, make it 7-6. It was a particuarly special day for Charlton striker Johnny Summers, who ended the match with five goals to his name.

BEST SEATS IN THE HOUSE
Hi Martin, I really enjoy reading your blog and stats every week. My question for you is this. As we saw at the weekend at St James' Park, my beloved Newcastle fought back from 4-0 down to snatch a point. I noticed all eight goals were scored at the Gallowgate and this got me thinking. Is this the highest total of goals scored at one end of a football pitch in one Premier League match? All the best, Jak Penny. MARTIN SAYS:
With the help of our friends at Opta we have looked through the records and discovered that this was the third time in Premier League history that eight goals were scored at one end. So Saturday's game between Newcastle and Arsenal matched the record, but did not beat it. Interestingly, the other two occasions when this occurred were both at White Hart Lane. Last season, Tottenham led Wigan 1-0 at half-time, but in the second half they scored eight goals at the Park Lane end on their way to recording a 9-1 win over Wigan. Supporters behind that goal would have seen five goals from Jermain Defoe, plus strikes from Aaron Lennon and Niko Kranjcar and a Chris Kirkland own goal, all in the second half. Supporters sitting at the other end of White Hart Lane in the Paxton Road stand also saw eight goals at their end in the 2001/02 season, but they won't have enjoyed it so much. The game in question was Tottenham's famous 5-3 defeat to Manchester United when Dean Richards, Les Ferdinand and Christian Ziege gave Spurs a 3-0 lead at half time, but United scored five in the same goal after the break with Andy Cole, Laurent Blanc, Ruud van Nistelrooy, Juan Sebastian Veron and David Beckham all getting in on the act. That game was unique because not only were eight goals scored at that end, but they were scored by eight different players.

COMBINATION UNLOCKED
Hello Martin, After Blackpool's 5-3 loss at Goodison Park on Saturday, I noticed that there have been 87 goals in their 25 games this season. I wondered if they were on course to break the record for the most goals combined (scored and conceded) in a 38 game PL season. Who is the current record holder, I thought perhaps Spurs from a of couple seasons back? Great column, keep it up. Ryan Herlihy (Ipswich fan) MARTIN SAYS:
Blackpool fans have certainly enjoyed their first season in the Premier League and, with their team top of the combined goals table, it is easy to see why. The Tangerines have scored 38 and conceded 49 in their 25 games so far this season, a total of 87. Just to put that in context, Fulham fans have only seen a total of 56 goals in Premier League games involving their team this season, scoring 28 and conceding 28. Although at least they saw four on the "Big Day" last Saturday. Below is a table of the top-10 combined totals in the Premier League since 1995/96, when it became a 20-team division. If Blackpool carry on at their current goal scoring rate of 1.52 and continue to concede 1.96 goals per game on average for the rest of the season, they will finish with 57 goals for and 74 against, giving them a total of 131 combined goals. That would put them fourth in the all-time list for a 20-team season. That list is currently topped by Manchester United, who scored 97 and conceded 45 in 1999/2000, for a combined total of 142 goals. Last season, Chelsea fans saw 135 Premier League goals (F103, A 32) in games involving their team. Most goals (for and against) in a 38-game Premier League season: 1999/00 Man Utd: 142 (F97 A45)
2009/10 Chelsea: 135 (F103 A32)
2002/03 Man Utd: 132 (F87 A45)
2002/03Arsenal: 127 (F85 A42)
2007/08 Tottenham: 127 (F66 A61)
2002/03 Newcastle: 126 (F74 A52)
1995/96 Wimbledon:125 (F55 A70)
2009/10 Arsenal: 124 (F83 A41
2009/10 Burnley: 124 (F42 A82)
2004/05 Arsenal: 123 (F87 A36) However, as you can see from this second table, when the Premier League was a 22-team contest Swindon managed a huge combined total of 147 goals - including 100 conceded. Most goals (for and against) in a 42-game Premier League season: 1993/94 Swindon:147 (F47 A100)
1992/93 Oldham: 137 (F63 A74)
1993/94 Sheff Wed: 130 (F76 A54)
1994/95 Ipswich 129: (F36 A93)
1992/93 Middlesbrough 129: (F54 A75)
1993/94 Norwich 126: (F65 A61)
1992/93 Tottenham 125: (F60 A66)
1994/95 Leicester125: (F45 A80)
1993/94 Newcastle 123: (F82 A41)
1993/94 QPR 123: (F62 A61)

WITH OR WITHOUT FERNANDO
Hi Martin, I have a question I can't find the answer to. How many times was Fernando Torres on the winning side, and how many times was he on the losing side. Also, how many times did Liverpool win with out him of the side while he was there? Hope you can help. Many Thanks, Mark Shelley MARTIN SAYS:
We've calculated the stats for Liverpool's Premier League record with and without Fernando Torres since he joined the Reds. We've looked at the games he played in each season and compared it to those he did not play in. These results exclude the games against Stoke and Chelsea because Torres was no longer a Liverpool player in those matches. 2007/08:

As you can see, Liverpool tended to pick up more points and win more games when he was in the side (they didn't lose with him in the team in his first two Premier League seasons). However, it is interesting to note that this season they won the only match in which he did not appear - against Aston Villa. However, to be fair to him, they were drawing when he was taken off in Sunday's game!
