Season review
Manchester United still have one more Premier League game to play after their final-day fixture with Bournemouth was abandoned. But, with top four now realistically out of reach, their domestic season can be assessed as a major disappointment.
After returning United to the Champions League in his first season, Louis van Gaal has failed to follow that up in his second term. The Old Trafford outfit were briefly top of the Premier League in September but after straight defeats to Bournemouth, Norwich and Stoke in December they never regained their place in the top-four.
United beat every team above them in the league at some point this season - with the exception of champions Leicester - and did the double over rivals Liverpool but too often dropped points against teams in the bottom half. Meanwhile, the team's style under Van Gaal was heavily criticised - no ground in the Premier League has seen fewer goals scored than Old Trafford.
A constant theme throughout the season was Van Gaal's future, with Jose Mourinho regularly linked with a summer move to the club. After failing to deliver silverware in the other cup competitions, Dutchman Van Gaal will hope for an FA Cup final victory over Crystal Palace to ease the pressure.
Quotes of the season
"There are matches that I have enjoyed and there are also matches where I'm very bored or angry because we are not disorganising our opponent's defence, but that is football." - Van Gaal on United's style.
"Has anybody in this room not a feeling to apologise to me? That's what I am wondering. I think I was already sacked, I have read. Or have been sacked." - Van Gaal hits back at the media.
"We are working hard, we are fighting with the manager to try and get the results and turn this season around." - underfire Wayne Rooney backs his boss Van Gaal in December.
Stats of the season
Manchester United have conceded fewer goals than any other team in the Barclays Premier League on home soil this season (8).
There have been just 32 goals in the Premier League at Old Trafford, fewer than on any other ground in the top flight this season.
The Red Devils have netted just 46 top-flight goals this season so far; their lowest goal tally in a completed Premier League campaign is 58 in 04/05.
Charlie Nicholas' view
"If United had managed to secure a top-four finish and win the FA Cup then I don't think there would be any doubt that would represent progress.
"This isn't a top club anymore and they've got a lot of rebuilding to do, which Louis van Gaal has done by introducing some exciting young players. I've never thought that the Jose Mourinho deal is a done one but the fans obviously haven't been happy with the style of football and missing out on Champions League football is a real blow."
