Scottish Cup: Kilmarnock dig in to frustrate Rangers at Ibrox

Rangers were frustrated in their quest to book a place to the Scottish Cup quarter-finals as they were held to a 0-0 draw by Kilmarnock at Ibrox.

The Championship side twice hit the goalframe as they dominated territorially for long periods but were unable to unlock a heavily-manned visiting defence and were forced to settle for a replay on Tuesday, February 16. 

Killie interim boss Lee McCulloch was back at the ground where he had spent eight years as a player and his gameplan of containment was evident after a lively opening quarter.  

Josh Magennis did get his head on Greg Kiltie's early cross but his glancing header slipped wide of the target with Wes Foderingham scrambling.

The lively Barrie McKay slipped a pass through to the rampaging Lee Wallace, whose fierce left-foot shot from the angle was palmed away by goalkeeper Jamie MacDonald.

James Tavernier was the next to try his luck in a entertaining opening 20 minutes, storming forward and cracking a right-foot shot off the post from 22 yards. 

A stinging drive from the marauding Tope Obadeyi forced Foderingham into a sprawling stop at the other end.

McKay had seen plenty of the ball down the left but popped up in the inside right position when he juggled the ball cleverly before getting off a volley that kept MacDonald on his toes.

Foderingham came to the hosts rescue when Craig Slater skipped into the box and his close-range blast flew over the keeper's head.

After the break, Killie were happy to sit in and try and hit lone frontman Magennis on the break - a tactic that was proving effective, if frustrating for all in light blue.

Martyn Waghorn blazed wildly over from distance but Andy Halliday went closer with a skidding strike that MacDonald tipped round the post at full stretch. 

Harry Forrester came off the bench as Warburton rang the changes and dragged a shot wide before Tavernier's whipped free-kick raced across the face and out for a goal-kick.

In a rare Killie forward foray, a free-kick sparked some anxiety in the home defence and Slater's shot was hacked clear.

But the action soon swung down the other end and Danny Wilson saw his looping header come back off the bar and Waghorn's touch was to let him down with the goal gaping.

Kallum Higginbotham was red carded for a high boot on Tavernier with two minutes remaining but the visitors survived three minutes of added time to ensure their presence in Monday's sixth round draw.
