With overnight leaders
Hoffenheim slipping to a 4-1 defeat at the hands of
Bayern Leverkusen on Friday, both
Bayern and
Hertha had the opportunity to go top with a win.
And it was the home side that stamped their title credentials with striker Andrey Voronin's brace securing the victory.
The Ukraine forward, who is on loan from Liverpool, opened the scoring for Hertha with a 38th minute header from Patrick Ebert's cross.
Miroslav Klose got Jurgen Klinsmann's side back into the game on 61 minutes with a close range header, but Voronin sealed the win with right-footed effort in the 77th minute.
Wolfsburg climbed up to sixth after beating
Eintracht Frankfurt 2-0 at the Commerzbank Arena.
Edin Dzeko opened the scoring heading the ball home from Christian Gentner with nine minutes gone, before Zvjezdan Misimovic wrapped up the game with a 66th minute penalty.
Hannover 96 slipped down a place to seventh after conceding late on to draw 3-3 with
Stuttgart.
The first half saw four goals as Mario Gomez and Martin Lanig gave Stuttgart an early advantage before two strikes in four minutes from Jiri Stanjner and Jacek Krzynowek levelled proceedings.
It looked it would end all square until former Birmingham striker Mikael Forssell put Hannover ahead in the 85th minute, but former Aston Villa midfielder Thomas Hitzlsperger had the final say with a left-foot drive two minutes later.
Bochum lifted themselves out of the bottom three after beating
Schalke 2-1 at home.
Kevin Kuranyi, who was linked with a move to Everton and Blackburn in the transfer window opened the scoring for the away side on 18 minutes, but goals in the 44th and the 57th minute by Mimoun Azaouagh and Christoph Dabrowski, respectively, ensured the comeback
