RISE AND FALL
Can you tell me which clubs have won the Championship immediately following promotion to the top flight. I know Nottingham Forest achieved the feat and I think Ipswich did in the 60s, but has anybody else done it. Also has any club been relegated the season after being crowned champions. I do not know of any and would think it unlikely to have happened. Steve Mayhead, Morden
Yes, Steve, Nottingham Forest and Ipswich both won the First Division the season after being promoted, but so did Tottenham. Spurs won the Second Division on 1950 and topped Division One the following season, a feat Ipswich repeated in 1961 and 1962. Then in 1977 Nottingham Forest were promoted after finishing third in Division Two, a year later they were the best team in the country. In answer to your second question, in 1937 Manchester City were crowned First Division champions, one year later and their fortunes had changed and they were relegated to the lower tier.

LONDON STALLING
Tottenham's recent defeat by Palace was yet another London Derby without victory for my beloved Spurs, can you give me our stats in London Derbies since the Premier League began, as I know it is really poor, I just need to know how poor? Paul Duhaney, Liverpool
You are right Paul, Spurs don't have the best of records against their London rivals, do they? In fact they have won just one of their last 22 London derbies - the victory coming courtesy of their 4-2 win over Charlton at the Valley on February 11 2004. Of particular note is their record against Arsenal, who they haven't beaten since November 1999 and, of course, Chelsea, who they last defeated in the league in February 1990. Goals from David Howells and Gary Lineker won that match for Spurs, but since then they have gone 30 games without a win over their west London rivals. But don't feel too down-hearted Paul, Spurs aren't the only team that have problems beating London clubs. So far this season Everton have only lost six matches - and all of those were against sides from the capital.

ENGLAND'S FINEST
Me and a friend are wondering who is England's all time top goal scorer? As we don't have a clue who it is? Neil Edmunds, Cirencester
That's a nice simple one Neil. The answer is Sir Bobby Charlton. The World Cup winner scored 49 goals in 106 matches. Gary Lineker came close to equalling that record, scoring 48 goals in his international career, and if he hadn't missed a penalty against Brazil at Wembley in 1992, he could have been the country's joint top-goalscorer. To date Michael Owen has scored 28 goals in 66 matches, but I know he has Sir Bobby's target in his sights.

HART ATTACKS
Big John Hartson is top goalscorer in the SPL at present but I wonder if you could tell me how many goals he has scored in the English Premiership. I say it is less than 60. Phil Emerald, Glasgow
You're right, Phil. The exact number of goals John Hartson scored in the Premiership is 55. The Wales striker scored 14 goals for Arsenal, 24 for West Ham, 11 for Wimbledon and six for Coventry in his seven seasons in the English top flight.

THINKING OUTSIDE THE BOX
Could you settle a bet for me please. Has Rudd van Nistlerooy ever scored a goal (any competition) from outside the penalty area for Manchester United. If he has could you give me the match details (date, competition, opposition etc.) Hope you can solve this for me. Thomas Moore
Yes, I can settle your bet - thanks to my friends at Opta - and it's a nice simple answer. No Thomas, Ruud van Nistelrooy has never scored a goal from outside the area for Manchester United.

KEANE TO LEARN
Can you please tell me how many Premiership appearances Roy Keane has Made for Manchester United and how many appearances overall? Gary Ohanlon
Roy Keane has made 457 appearances for Manchester United in all competitions. In that time he has scored 49 goals (a tally he has been at for over 50 matches). In the Premiership, Keane has played 311 matches and scored 32 times.
