Van to miss Romania game

Edwin van der Sar has informed Marco van Basten he will not be fit to face Romania.

Edwin van der Sar has informed Marco van Basten he will not be fit to face Romania this weekend.

The Manchester United goalkeeper is still recovering from the calf injury he picked up in the warm-up before the FA Cup quarter-final with Middlesbrough earlier this month.

As a result of the injury Van der Sar has missed United's last three games as he refuses to take any risks with his fitness.

Van der Sar was named in the Holland squad by Van Basten for the forthcoming qualifiers with Romania and Slovenia despite the injury.

However, the Romania game at the weekend has come too early for Van der Sar and Holland are now waiting to see if he will be fit for next week's clash with Slovenia.

Henk Timmer and Maarten Stekelenburg are battling it out to replace Van der Sar against Romania.
