Joe Allen admits the whole Wales team are "hugely gutted" to see Chris Coleman leave as manager.
Coleman left the national side to take charge at Sunderland and has since guided the Championship club to a win and two defeats in his first three games.
Coleman led Wales to their first major tournament appearance in 58 years at Euro 2016, and surpassed all expectations by getting them to the semi-finals.
"We are all hugely gutted," Allen said. "I think it is not often a manger leaves his post and every single person is sad to see him go.
"That is testament to the job he has done for us and the impact he has had on all of us. It has been a really successful phase that we will not forget."
Contenders for the job are Coleman's assistant Osian Roberts, ex-Wales midfielder Ryan Giggs and Tony Pulis. Craig Bellamy and John Hartson have also expressed an interest in taking over.
Speaking about the vacant manager role, Allen said: "I think we need someone who is committed and ambitious and has seen the hard work that has been put in place and wants to build on that.
"We are all excited," he added. "But, with the disappointment of Coleman moving on, we are now all looking forward to seeing who the replacement will be and how things fare."
