PSV Eindhoven cut the gap on Eredivisie leaders Ajax to a single point with a 3-1 win at Excelsior.
Ajax had dropped points against Heracles on Tuesday and PSV took full advantage of that slip with Luuk de Jong sending them on their way to victory with an eighth-minute header.
Excelsior were finished off after half-time when Jorrit Hendrix struck a superb volley and Luciano Narsingh added a third on the hour mark.
Jeffrey Bruma's own goal provided the relegation-troubled hosts with some consolation but it was a comfortable win for PSV.
NEC Nijmegen climbed into fourth place with a 2-0 success over struggling FC Twente.
Twente conceded twice in the final 15 minutes after going closest to an opener when Zakaria El Azzouzi saw his first-half effort disallowed.
Anthony Limbombe broke the deadlock after 75 minutes when he raced on to Navarone Foor's pass and finished with a neat chip.
Christian Santos scored his 14th goal of the season two minutes from time to seal victory, NEC's third in four games.
Vincent Janssen continued his rich vein of scoring form in AZ Alkmaar's 3-1 victory over lowly Cambuur Leeuwarden.
Janssen took his season's tally to 14 with a hat-trick in the 4-2 weekend win over Feyenoord and he was on target again within two minutes at the AFAS Stadion.
Joris van Overeem doubled AZ's advantage after 12 minutes before Janssen struck again eight minutes later.
Martijn Barto grabbed a consolation with 18 minutes remaining but Cambuur remain one place off the bottom with only two victories all season.
De Graafschap closed the gap on Cambuur at the bottom to two points with a 3-1 win over ADO Den Haag.
Mike Havenaar's 100th senior goal gave Den Haag the lead but Vincent Vermeij, Karim Tarfi and Cas Peters all scored in the final quarter.
Vitesse drew 1-1 at Zwolle as they missed the chance to break into the top four.
Dirk Marcellis equalised for Zwolle three minutes after team-mate Bram van Polen had deflected Renato Ibarra's 65th-minute cross into his own goal.
