Real Madrid star in contention to play against Sporting Gijon

Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo has returned to training and is expected to recover full fitness for his side's Primera Liga game against Sporting Gijon on Saturday. Ronaldo was forced to miss training on Tuesday because of an ankle injury he picked up during Los Blancos' 4-1 victory over city rivals Atletico Madrid last weekend. The 26-year-old rejoined the rest of the Madrid squad for their practice session on Thursday morning and is likely to be included in Jose Mourinho's team against Sporting in Gijon. "Cristiano Ronaldo rejoined the squad in this morning's training session in preparation for Saturday's 18:00 CET match against Sporting Gijon," reads a statement on Madrid's official website. "Jose Mourinho had 23 men on hand: 21 first teamers and the academy's Tomas Mejias and Pedro Mendes. Carvalho and Arbeloa did recovery exercises. Football Director Miguel Pardeza attended the session." Madrid are currently at the top of the table in the Spanish top flight with 34 points from 13 matches, three points clear of second-placed Barcelona and have a game in hand.
