Barca defender ready to sign on

Rafael Marquez has revealed that he is close to signing a new contract with European champions Barcelona. The Mexican centre-half has held positive talks with the Catalan giants and expects the paperwork to be finalised shortly. Reports had suggested that a stalemate had been reached in regards to the length of a proposed deal, but Marquez insists he is ready to commit his future to Pep Guardiola's side. "I do not have a problem with staying here and I intend to close the deal very soon," he said. "We are still waiting for a few details to be sorted out but, in general, there is an agreement between both parties."

Agreement

Marquez expects his latest contract to be his last in Europe, as the 30-year-old admits he is keen to see out his playing days back in his homeland. "I think this will be my last big deal because I have decided that Barcelona will be my last big club," he added. "I want to finish my career in Mexico." Marquez has been some way short of his best this season, but he expects to be performing at the top of his game in the near future. "This season I have had a few problems to deal with, but very soon I will be the same defender you have seen in other seasons," he said.
