Vincenzo Montella endured a nightmare first game in charge of Sevilla as they were beaten 5-3 at home by rivals Real Betis on Saturday.
Montella, who was sacked by AC Milan in November, saw his new team beaten at home for the first time in any competition since November 2016.
Betis, who scored five goals for the first time against Sevilla, struck in the opening minute through Fabian Ruiz. They lost their lead twice before half-time but led 4-2 in the second half after quickfire goals from Riza Durmisi and Sergio Leon.
Clement Lenglet's goal made for a nail-biting finish but Cristian Tello sealed victory for Betis with a counter-attack goal in stoppage-time, taking his side up to eighth in the standings.
Valencia had to come from behind to keep up the pressure on Atletico Madrid - who beat Getafe 2-0 in an eventful return for Diego Costa - as they emerged 2-1 winners over Girona.
Portu nodded home Johan Mojica's cross in the ninth minute, but things went wrong for the mid-table side when Jonas Ramalho turned the ball into his own net before Daniel Parejo's penalty snatched the spoils.
Las Palmas' hopes of climbing off the foot of the table were dashed by a 2-1 home defeat to Eibar.
The struggling club took the lead through a Jonathan Viera penalty only for strikes by Fabian Orellana and Sergi Enrich to snatch the result.
