Celtic defender delighted with first Scotland call-up

Celtic defender Charlie Mulgrew believes forgetting about Scotland has helped him finally win a first senior international call-up. Mulgrew, 25, has been called up by Craig Levein for next week's friendly against Slovenia. He represented his country at Under 21 level and did look set to get his chance at the top level in November's friendly in Cyprus. But injury prevented him linking up with Levein's men, forcing him to wait for his first cap. Now the versatile Hoops star has been given the opportunity after helping his club open up a commanding lead at the top of the SPL.

Mulgrew said: "I'm delighted. It's an honour to be called up for your country and I'm very pleased. "I always had hopes that I could get back to this level and play for Scotland. But you just need to keep your head down and keep believing in yourself. "Thankfully I did that and I'm just glad to get the opportunity. "I have just been getting on with my business at Celtic, making sure that we have done our best to pick up three points every week and placing Scotland to the back of my mind. "It has come up now and I'm delighted." Mulgrew has played left-back, left-midfield and centre-back for Celtic this season and says he will play anywhere to earn his first Scotland cap. He added: "It's up to Craig Levein. Wherever he has in mind, I'll be happy to do a job."
