Police Scotland has confirmed it will analyse the incident which saw three players sent-off at the end of Motherwell’s 3-0 victory over Rangers.
Following the full-time whistle at Fir Park, television pictures showed Lee Erwin pushing Bilel Mohsni and the Rangers defender responding with his fists and his boot.
Motherwell substitute Fraser Kerr then got involved in a tangle with Mohsni, as they grappled with each other before the players were ushered into the tunnel.
Erwin claimed the confrontation occurred because Mohsni refused to shake hands and swore at him following Motherwell’s 6-1 aggregate play-off victory.
And he branded Mohsni an embarrassment as Rangers boss Stuart McCall revealed there was little doubt in his mind the Tunisian would be leaving the club this summer.
“I tried to shake Mohsni’s hand to wish him all the best but he reacted badly," Erwin said. “I pushed him away and he reacted badly. A player at a club at that level shouldn’t be acting like that. It’s embarrassing for him and the club.”
Police Scotland say they are now going to "conduct a full review of the circumstances".
McCall, who was in charge of Motherwell until November last year, was unaware of the incident but discussed it with referee Craig Thomson.
“I know you’re not going to believe but hand of my heart, I’ve not seen it. I was down the tunnel and I heard all the roaring so I came running back,” McCall said.
“I’ve spoken to Craig and I believe there has been three red cards after the game, one to ourselves and two to Motherwell.
When informed by a journalist about the TV images, McCall was unhappy with the apparent conduct of Mohsni, who is likely to leave Ibrox this summer.
“Obviously that’s not acceptable. That’s totally disgraceful if that’s the case. Nobody can condone that sort of behaviour if that’s what’s happened and I take your word that it is.
“Bilel’s contract is up and that’s totally unacceptable.
"I don't know if the club can take any action against him but I don't think there is any doubt he won't be at the football club next season."
