Friendlies round-up

Swansea opened their brand new stadium with a 1-1 draw against Fulham.

Swansea opened their brand new 25,000 all-seater stadium with a 1-1 draw with Premiership Fulham.

The ground, which is yet to be officially named but is known locally as The White Rock, saw Fulham take the lead after a goalless first half as Steed Malbranque took the honours of the first ever goal at the South Wales venue.

Swansea made sure they did not begin their new era with defeat thanks to winger Marc Goodfellow, who came off the bench to fire home and secure a draw to the delight of over 20,000 home fans.

Middlesbrough's game at Darlington was abandoned at half time due to a security alert. The game was a testimonial for ex-Quaker Craig Liddle, who also played Boro earlier in his career.

Birmingham proved far too strong for Midlands neighbours Derby as they sealed a 4-0 win at Pride Park.

Mikael Forssell opened the scoring just after the half hour, before Emile Heskey made it 2-0 on the stroke of half time.

Heskey grabbed his second on the hour, before Finnish youngster Njazi Kuqi fired home in the final minute.

A strong Charlton side was held to a goalless draw by Brentford at Griffin Park. Jason Euell could have sealed victory from the penalty spot, but his spot-kick was saved by Ademola Bankole.

Blackburn claimed a 1-1 draw in Germany against Bundesliga Zwei side 1860 Munich.

Nemanja Vucicevic gave 1860 the lead just after half time, but Garry Flitcroft levelled for Mark Hughes's side in the final minute. Earlier both sides had been reduced to ten men when Rodrigo Costa and Matt Derbyshire were dismissed.

Aston Villa were held to a 1-1 draw by Jonkopings in the second game of their pre-season tour of Sweden.

Nolberto Solano fired Villa ahead midway through the second half, but Joachim Dahlstrom levelled late on.

West Bromwich Albion suffered their third straight pre-season loss after going down 5-0 to Portuguese champions Benfica in the Algarve.

Bryan Robson fielded his first choice line-up, but they were way off the pace as they went down without much of a struggle.

Brazilian Geovanni was the star of the show as he grabbed a well-taken hat-trick.

He opened the scoring after just six minutes and doubled his and Benfica's tally just 20 minutes later.

Into the second period and Benfica fired home three goals in just six minutes as they steamrolled The Baggies.

Helio Roque scored just before the hour, after which Geovanni sealed his treble and Simao Sabrosa fired home.

A young Manchester United side was held to a 0-0 draw at Hyde.

Bobby Zamora earned West Ham a 2-2 draw at Yeovil with an equaliser four minutes from time, although the striker did miss a second-half penalty.

Argentine trialist Pablo Bastianini gave The Glovers the lead with just four minutes on the clock, but Czech Petr Mikolanda did his chances of earning a permanent move to Upton Park no harm by bagging his third goal in two games.

Kevin Gall restored the hosts' lead before the break, but Zamora shrugged off his blunder from the spot to ensure honours ended even.

Finally, Sunderland ended their four-match tour of North America's Pacific Northwest region with goalless draw with United Soccer Leagues First Division side Portland Timbers.

The match was played on an artificial surface at PGE Park in Portland, Oregon, with Byron Alvarez missing the best chance of the match from the penalty spot for the Timbers.

Black Cats boss Mick McCarthy made 16 substitutions during the 90 minutes, with the match played in front of a crowd of 15,376 on Saturday evening.
