Manager leaves after less than five months in the job

Notts County have sacked manager Craig Short after less than five months in charge of the League One club. Short was appointed by the Magpies in the summer after his predecessor Steve Cotterill had led the club to promotion from League Two. However, Short has endured a mixed tenure at Meadow Lane after collecting 16 points from the club's opening 13 games. Saturday's 2-1 defeat at Colchester United proved to be the final straw for the club's board, with the result leaving the Magpies in 16th position. The Magpies did reach the third round of the Carling Cup before being knocked out by Wolves, while they lost to Sheffield Wednesday in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy. A club statement read: "Following a board meeting convened this morning, the board decided to review the current status of the first team. "Following this review, it was decided to make changes to the first-team management. "Consequently, the first-team manager Craig Short and assistant manager Dave Kevan have been relieved of their duties with immediate effect. "The board wishes to thank them both for all of their endeavours whilst at Notts County and wish them well for the future. "There will be no further statement at this time."
