Brighton manager Chris Hughton insists football has made good progress in its handling of offensive behaviour and says there is "a line that should not be crossed".
The FA has been in the spotlight over the handling of allegations made against former England Women's manager Mark Sampson.
Chelsea striker Eni Aluko accused Sampson of bullying and using racist language and Hughton says everyone must be aware of the boundaries.
He said: "We are all very aware at this particular moment on what does cross the line and certainly anything that is deemed offensive to anyone particular individual then that is crossing the line.
"What we have in the game at the moment is certainly a better changing room and a better environment than what there used to be but there are areas we maybe still need to look at."
Hughton is hopeful Shane Duffy will be available to face West Ham in the Sky Live Friday night game.
Duffy was forced to come off during the 1-1 draw with Everton last weekend and has not been able to train this week.
The Albion manager said: "We think he'll be okay. He hasn't trained but we expect him to train on Thursday and hopefully he'll be okay."
Sam Baldock and Beram Kayal are both are set to play for the U23 side against Middlesbrough as they step up their fitness after injury while Steve Sidwell (back) is also still ruled out.
Striker Tomer Hemed serves the final game of his three-game suspension.
Brighton, who sit 14th in the Premier League table - level on points with West Ham - head into Friday's game looking for their first away win of the season.
"At home, I think we have acquitted ourselves well; we've won two games, drawn one and put on a very good show against Manchester City (a 2-0 defeat)," Hughton added.
"It's going to be about away form that's going to be the most challenging. It's a game away from home, a big stadium, against a very talented team and seeing a way for us getting points away from home."
