Chris Palmer struck twice as Gillingham earned their first win of the season by beating Shrewsbury 2-0 at Priestfield.
The midfielder scored in each half on Saturday as the Shrews suffered their first defeat of the League Two campaign and lost top spot in the process. The hosts were quickest out of the blocks and took a 12th-minute lead when Palmer bundled home after a long throw from Jack Payne caused panic in the Shrews defence. Five minutes after the restart, the Gills had a great chance to double their lead, but Chris Neal saved Adebayo Akinfenwa's penalty after Mat Sadler had handled. Palmer though made no mistake from the spot on 59 minutes, sending Neal the wrong way after Craig Disley had chopped down Danny Spiller. Town missed a glorious late chance to get back into the contest when Mark Wright shot straight at home keeper Lance Cronin from point-blank range.
