South Yorkshire Police will review 200 hours of CCTV footage in a bid to identify Millwall fans responsible for causing unrest at their game with Rotherham on Saturday.

A section of the 1,300-strong following from London took exception to seeing their side concede a late goal, which gave the Millers a vital 2-1 win at the foot of the Sky Bet Championship table, and attempted to invade home areas of the AESSEAL New York Stadium.

Riot police were forced to intervene before trouble continued outside the ground after full-time where a number of stewards and police officers suffered minor injuries.

After collecting footage from CCTV cameras inside the ground, the police will now trawl through it in order to identify those involved.

Senior Investigating Officer Detective Inspector Steven Ashmore said: "We have extensive footage available to us from inside the ground and work has already begun in earnest to identify those individuals involved.

"In addition to working with our colleagues in London, we will also be reaching out to media outlets who filmed the match to see if they will share their footage with us, as well as trawling CCTV cameras from across the town to ensure no stone is left unturned in our bid to bring those responsible to account.

"The actions of a few spoiled this event for many others and their behaviour will not be tolerated.

"I'd like to reassure the public of Rotherham that we are taking this incident incredibly seriously and if anyone has any information or footage that they wish to share with us then I would urge them to get in touch."

Rotherham condemned the "unprecedented level of violent behaviour" of the Millwall fans on Monday while the Lions have vowed to ban anyone found guilty.

A club statement by the Lions read: "Millwall Football Club will do everything possible to assist Rotherham United FC and South Yorkshire Police investigating the disorder that occurred during Saturday's match at the New York Stadium.

"The club's position remains clear - anyone associated with the club found guilty of violent behaviour will be banned from Millwall matches, in addition to any punishment they receive from the authorities."
