Grimsby 1-0 Carlisle: Cumbrians falter in late play-off push
Monday 22 April 2019 20:00, UK
Carlisle's Sky Bet League Two play-off hopes were dealt a big blow as Joe Grayson's last-minute strike saw them fall to a 1-0 defeat at Grimsby.
Charles Vernam created an early chance for the Mariners as he drove at the Carlisle defence, before seeing his deflected shot spin just wide of the post.
There were few chances in the first half, though, with Callum O'Hare coming closest for the visitors after seeing his shot blocked by Harry Davis.
Michael Jolley's men started the second period brightly but it was Carlisle who created the first chance of the half, with James McKeown coming off his line quickly to block Nathan Thomas' strike.
Vernam then took the bouncing ball well on the volley to force Adam Collin into a smart save, but the game looked destined to remain goalless as time ticked away.

That was until the 90th minute, when Vernam sent the ball in from the right to find Grayson at the back post, with the on-loan Blackburn defender slotting home to earn Grimsby a first win in 11 games.
Carlisle are two points outside the play-off places with two games to go.
