Brian Wilson has been told he has a future at Oldham if Notts County decide they do not want the defender.
The 32-year-old has been training with the Sky Bet League 2 Magpies with a view to completing a switch to Meadow Lane.
However, he returned to the heart of Oldham's defence for the pre-season friendly with Bolton on Tuesday and, with 12 months still to run on his SportsDirect.com Park deal, manager Darren Kelly has assured Wilson his career with the club is not over if Notts County's interest ends.
"We're waiting to hear from Notts County on Brian Wilson," Kelly said.
"Everyone knows he was at Notts County, but until I hear otherwise he will be a massive part of the team.
"He's a quality player. Until things change, he will be part of the team."
