Josh Law struck the winning goal as Oldham won 2-1 to make it into the second round of the EFL Cup at the expense of 10-man Sky Bet Championship side Wigan.
The right-back exchanged passes with fellow scorer Ryan Flynn and slotted home low from close range in the 83rd minute for the League One outfit.
Oldham had opened the scoring thanks to Flynn's individual goal. Paul Green won the ball off Donervon Daniels and ex-Sheffield United winger Flynn took it in his stride, dribbling into the box and shaping a low shot beyond the reach of Jussi Jaaskelainen in the 18th minute.
Wigan responded well and Will Grigg levelled with a fierce volley off a Jake Buxton nod-back 34 minutes in when a corner wasn't cleared by the home side.
Buxton then saw red in the last minute of the opening period after a high tackle on Marc Klok.
Lee Erwin and Peter Clarke both failed to make excellent headed chances count before Law had the final say, sending Oldham into the next stage for the first time in eight seasons.
