Shefki Kuqi will hold final talks with Oldham on Wednesday about becoming their new manager, according to Sky sources.
It is understood personal terms have been agreed with the 39-year-old, who counts Oldham among 11 British clubs he played for during a 16-year career as a striker.
And the League One club will also bring in experienced boss Sean O'Driscoll as director of football in a new set-up.
O'Driscoll left Walsall in March and previously managed Bournemouth, Doncaster, Nottingham Forest and Bristol City.
Oldham have been without a manager since John Sheridan's fourth spell in charge ended in May after just four months.
Former Leeds and Rotherham boss Steve Evans turned down the job earlier this month.
