Barnsley have signed winger Adam Hammill and teenage striker Ivan Toney as boss Lee Johnson bids to halt the club's slide.
Hammill, 27, released from Huddersfield by mutual consent in September, returns for a second spell at Oakwell after signing a short-term contract.
Toney, 19, signed by Newcastle from Northampton in the summer, has agreed a 28-day loan deal with the Reds.
"We are delighted to have (them) on board. (Hammill) has a great pedigree, he's quick, direct and will get crosses into the box," Johnson told the club's official website.
"I'm sure the fans are just as excited as I am to see him back in a red shirt.
"He's turned down interest from elsewhere because he feels at home here and we're delighted to have him back."
Barnsley have slipped into Sky Bet League 1's bottom four after losing their last seven league games and crashed out of the FA Cup at Altrincham on Saturday.
Johnson is hoping the double signing can kickstart his side's season, with the addition of Toney giving him new options up front.
"Ivan is quick and he's a goal-threat," Johnson said.
"He's just what we need in the final third and he's very highly thought of at Newcastle.
"I'm really pleased Steve McClaren and Newcastle have allowed us to take Ivan on board.
"He has lots of different attributes in his locker and can score different types of goals. We're all excited to have him in the dressing room because he can be add that bit of quality in the final third."
Hammill was a big hit at Barnsley in the Sky Bet Championship in 2009 on loan and joined permanently from Liverpool in August that year before Wolves signed the winger halfway through the 2010-11 season.
