Burnley want football university
Burnley have announced that they want to build a university and concert venue at their Turf Moor ground.
The Clarets' plans include a university campus which would be built on the current Burnley Cricket Club site, which lies to the back of one of the club's current stands.
The new stand would also become a concert venue, with a unique shutter system on the front which would close it off from the pitch and make it a usable for other purposes.
Chief executive Paul Fletcher insists the whole project is viable.
"We approach everything at Burnley quite differently and we propose to have the first football university in the world here at Turf Moor," Fletcher told
Sky Sports News.
"It is almost impossible to make money from a football stadium as you're only using it once a fortnight, a Stadi-Arena gives you the opportunity to use a stand every night of the week.
"The key is to make sure it does not impact on the pitch.
"A metre before the dead-ball line the roof extends ten to 12 metres and a door comes across which only takes eight minutes, it is tried and tested technology that has been around for around 30 years and that allows you to have a big empty stage - you could put a stage and have concerts and even move seats and have exhibitions, it is a pretty simple idea but nobody has done it yet.
"The stand will also have a 60 bedroom hotel in it and the cost will be about £15 to £16million, so it is not an awful lot of money when you think about it for what you get."
