Derby County midfielder Will Hughes has signed a new deal that commits him to the club until the summer of 2020.

The 21-year-old England U21 international has featured in 25 games in the current season having become an instrumental figure in the side’s surge up the Championship table under Steve McClaren.

McClaren said: "We’re all thrilled that Will Hughes has signed his new deal and committed his future to Derby County until at least 2020.

"Will is an exciting young talent and a really important player for this football club. I’m excited about seeing him continue to develop, improve and play a key role here at Derby County moving forwards."

Hughes is the fifth Derby player to sign fresh terms this season, following in the footsteps of youngsters Max Lowe, Jonathan Mitchell and Charles Vernam – as well as experienced goalkeeper Scott Carson.

Since making his debut aged 16 in November 2011, Hughes has played in 170 games for the Rams.
