Paddy McNair is set to return from injury for Sunderland U23s on Tuesday following 11 months on the sidelines.
The Northern Ireland international ruptured his cruciate ligament last November and has not played any first-team football since.
Former Manchester United midfielder McNair is set to feature against Hertha Berlin for Sunderland's reserve side at the Stadium of Light.
Northern Ireland manager Michael O'Neill has admitted it is "unlikely" he will have McNair available for their World Cup Qualifier play-off next month.
Duncan Watmore, who suffered the same injury within a week of McNair last season, is also expected to feature for Sunderland U23s as he continues his rehabilitation.
Watmore made his competitive return against Preston last week.
