Sunderland are already beginning to show signs of progress under new manager David Moyes, according to Jermain Defoe.
Moyes, appointed successor to Sam Allardyce after his appointment as England manager, is undertaking his first top-flight managerial role since his ill-fated spell at Manchester United was cut short in 2014.
The Scot, who took charge of Real Sociedad in between his sacking at Old Trafford and his appointment at the Stadium of Light, has been tasked with guiding the Black Cats up the Premier League table after Allardyce masterminded another escape from relegation.
The former Everton boss has had just four weeks to work with his new squad ahead of the new season, but that's been ample time for Defoe to get clear understanding of Moyes' methods.
"The new manager has come in and things have changed - different methods, different way of play and different training - but things are really good," Defoe told Sky Sports.
"There's a lot of possession in training, which the boys enjoy, and we're really organised. The manager is very hands-on with the players in terms of coaching and we've enjoyed it, it's been good so far.
"Beforehand I spoke to Sam (Allardyce) about David Moyes and he said he was a good manager. To be fair his experience speaks for itself.
"I remember his time at Everton, playing against them was always a difficult game, they were organised defensively and offensively they went forward and crosses into the box.
"I'm sure he would have liked his time at Manchester United to go differently but you live and you learn.
"You can tell he had a stint in Spain because I can imagine they do a lot of possession sessions, both small and big, and we've been really sharp in training.
"He always wants the boys to improve every day, improve keeping the ball, making the opposition run and, of course, making chances. But first and foremost we focus on being organised and solid."
Moyes was denied a deserved point in his first competitive game in charge of Sunderland, with debutant Paddy McNair's late own goal handing Manchester City victory.
"I thought we were solid against Manchester City," Defoe added. "We were unfortunate not to get a point.
"I was disappointed with the goal at the end. But so far it's been good (under Moyes) and I've enjoyed it."
Sunderland will be seeking their first win of the season, and first of the Moyes era, when north-east rivals Middlesbrough travel to Wearside on Super Sunday.
Having starred in many triumphs over Newcastle during his time with Sunderland, Defoe is keen to continue that form against Boro, who replaced the Magpies in the top flight following their relegation to the Sky Bet Championship.
Asked whether he felt an added buzz ahead of derbies, he said: "100 per cent, it's like cup final day.
"I went for a walk before the derbies last season and I could see all the fans outside the hotel, it's a different feeling like a cup final. As a player they are ones you want to play in.
"I'm looking forward to Sunday's game, obviously it's going to be a tough derby against Middlesbrough, who are back in the Premier League.
"They've got different players, different ideas and a good manager. I'm looking forward to it, as are the players.
"I'm sure the fans are buzzing too. It's a good first home game. I've always enjoyed playing against Middlesbrough."
