Royals equal biggest ever home win at expense of poor Posh
Reading boss Brian McDermott was left searching for superlatives after watching his side equal their biggest-ever win at the Madejski Stadium with a six-goal thrashing of rock-bottom Peterborough.
The emphatic victory keeps the Royals' slim play-off hopes alive, while Posh simply cannot wait for their season to end after crashing to their 27th league defeat of the season.
Alex Pearce headed Reading ahead before attacking trio Gylfi Sigurdsson, Jobi McAnuff and Jimmy Kebe put the result beyond doubt before half-time.
And Reading boss McDermott labelled his side's first half performance "as good as I have seen at the Madejski for many a year".
He added: "Some of the football we played from the back was terrific and it was at a tempo. We didn't get enough shots and crosses in against Newcastle in midweek and it was something we had worked on putting right in training.
"We kept it up in the second half because the boys were enjoying the game and trying to keep a clean sheet.
Terrific
We didn't want a dull second half. Some games can go like that when a team is well ahead at half-time.
"Their keeper pulled off a couple of good saves. It's tough for a team like that when they are already relegated. Some of the football we played was terrific. We created a lot of chances and we didn't quite get the finish.
"I am told we have the same goal difference as Swansea, who we can still catch, but I can't do anything about Swansea and I am sure they will get more than one point. If they did happen to lose a couple of games it would be fun."
Peterborough boss Gary Johnson said: "That group is not good enough for the Championship but we already know that. Individually we were poor and collectively we were poor.
"They scored six and could have had ten. We got well and truly trounced and the lads are down about it. They are working hard in training but when it comes to games they seem to have lost their Championship ability.
"We weren't good enough at either end of the pitch. It was a poor performance all round. I knew it would be a big job and some of those players are going to have to work hard to stay in my plans for next season. It shows me I need a few more players than I thought at first.
"We have got to do quite a lot of work in the summer to get a team that can win. What we have got is a team I am still learning about at the moment."
