Doncaster bid for Kilkenny in case key midfielder departs

Doncaster Rovers are preparing themselves for the departure of key midfielder Richie Wellens this summer. The 29-year-old has been at the centre of growing speculation that has seen him linked with a move away from the Keepmoat Stadium in recent weeks. However Rovers are yet to receive an official offer for the former Manchester United schemer and director of football Mickey Walker hopes that things stay that way. Wellens was an integral part of the Rovers team that survived the drop last year, racking up a total of 39 league starts, although the club have already made a bid for Leeds midfielder Neil Kilkenny in case Wellens does leave. "There's one bid especially that's in there and Sean's (O'Driscoll) done that with the chairman and we've shown an interest in the boy Kilkenny at Leeds, a good footballer," Walker told the club's official website.

Enhance the team

"This is a 'just-in-case' scenario because if Richie Wellens goes we need to bring someone in of that ilk or better and if we bring that boy in or somebody like that it will enhance the team. "There's a lot of paper-talk, but there's nothing concrete there, nothing in writing on Dave Morris' (chief executive) desk, it hasn't been done at this moment. "I'd like to think it might not be done because we'd like to keep the team. Seeing what Sean has done in two years, they have knitted well together and it would be a travesty if we have to break that up."
